OUR CHALLENGE

For five years, Hutchison Ports has been participating in the Go Green initiative, with employees worldwide demonstrating their enthusiasm for conservation and environmental protection. It has been a satisfying journey that we have been pleased to share with our partners - DP World, Port of Rotterdam Authority, PSA International and Shanghai International Port Group - and their employees.

This year, we turned our attention to the issue of waste management and recycling. Support for these activities, both within and outside the gates of our ports, depends on individuals. Therefore, our chief mission was to encourage as many employees as possible to think carefully before they bin their waste.

We focused our attention on two very different waste products: aluminium cans and mobile phones. Aluminium cans are one of the most recyclable waste items, while mobile phones are e-waste that contains many valuable resources as well as toxic components that can negatively impact both human health and the environment if improperly disposed of. By stressing the differences between these items to participating employees we ingrained a message that proper waste management and recycling has no one-size-fits-all solutions.

In total, 35 of our port operations collected 858 kg of cans and 1,130 mobile phones, a modest number that was secondary to the impressive support from our employees. With so many green "ambassadors" in our ranks, I have full confidence that the positive effects of our action will spread far and wide.
