Hutchison Port Holdings

This is the second year that Hutchison Port Holdings Limited (HPH) has taken part in the global environmental initiative which came about from the Global Port Group’s (GPG) Environmental Group. Following last year’s theme “Recycling Begins & Ends With You” this year “Go Green” was chosen.

The “Go Green” initiative had an unprecedented level of involvement from the world’s leading port operators and demonstrates the industry-wide commitment to the environment. In 2014, HPH and DP World took part and in 2015 they were joined by APM Terminals, PSA International, Port of Rotterdam Authority and Shanghai International Port (Group).

The activities across all five port operators’ networks were conducted in the week of 14-21 September. By aligning these important green events on a global scale, the impact of the campaign was exponentially increased.

Joint activities between the operators were conducted in a number of locations, with activities ranging from planting trees and artificial reefs to collecting litter and cleaning beaches. Over the course of the week, 7,500 port employees planted 6,000 trees and collected 52 tonnes of waste.

When I look over the range of events that took place, it’s rewarding to see HPH’s global network, and other major global port operators, uniting on the green front. At HPH, we conduct operations in an environmentally-sustainable manner and are constantly looking for innovative and efficient ways to minimise our impact on the environment. Our continued involvement in this programme is part of our long-standing commitment towards a cleaner, greener world.
